The primary aim of the study was to investigate the influence of body mass index (BMI) on physical fitness in school children. A secondary aim was to investigate the association between physical fitness and anthropometric measures in school children. Using a cross-sectional study design, the study was conducted in the city of Durres, in the western region of the Republic of Albania. A sample of 1155 schoolchildren (513 boys, 642 girls) aged 10-13 years was included. Anthropometric measures (height, weight and waist circumference) and physical fitness (isometric handgrip strength, standing long jump, sit-ups and push-ups). In boys, BMI, waist circumference and body fat percentage had a significant association with both isometric and muscular strength. In girls, BMI and waist circumference had a significant association with muscular strength. In boys, BMI and waist circumference were also significantly associated with standing long jump and sit-ups; in girls, only BMI was significantly associated with push-ups. The results of this study provide the basis for BMI to be considered as a potential confounder in the assessment of physical fitness in boys and girls. The findings also indicate that screening for overweight children should be conducted, taking into account the association of BMI with muscular strength in both genders.Fetal and maternal nociception in the pregnant baboon.
